«TYPOLOGY OF MISFORTUNE»

Curtains!
The uniformity of space common in modernism gave way to diversity in time with postmodernism in the eighties of the past century. Narration and theatrical techniques were introduced with the recognition of linguistic structure within artistic production. Art ceased to be a mere object and the spectator its divine agent, also making the inclusion of not necessarily artistic elements such as gender or social uses.
In this exhibition, Ricardo Sánchez Cuerda has established a stimulating dialogue with the gallery’s space, installing various works that send the concept of anguish and which have their origins in different life experiences of his own childhood and familial environment. And he has done it articulating a symbolic discourse with diverse ramifications through which the spectator can transit and confront his particular and hidden worries in this sort of social dystopia in which we... live? Forced into an unending pursuit of happiness through the frantic consumption of objects, emotions and the planet itself. We bear witness to the spectacle announced by Débord and defined not only in terms of representation but also in the social relations of capitalism to subsume all within representation: “[the spectacle is] a social relation mediated through images”.
A representation that, in the case of the roles which we perform as individuals in daily life, the artist suspects that could be similar to the assignments of roles to actors by the author of a theater play and that they are thus condemned to repeat every day and every night when the curtains rise and fall.
