«WANTED FOR ILLEGAL ART SINCE 1995»
Sfhir
12/09/19 – 21/10/19
It’s been quite a few years, ever since 1995, that Sfhir found the way to express himself and set his worries loose through graffiti and urban art. Since then, he has not ceased to innovate and experiment with different techniques and materials of greatly varying nature such as airbrushes, paint guns, paint rollers, photoluminescent paint on wool, etc.
Making a schematic summary of his work is an impossible task. All in all, this “urban writer”, as he defines himself, conceives unusual art, art that is hard to delimit and define. An incessant exploration that was perhaps due to a phrase he read on a New York train and that he has carried within him ever since that said: “all I know is I can’t stop”. His graffiti work covers the walls of many cities, both in Spain and internationally. Many of them have become true icons of street art; and indeed, Sfhir’s signature “wanted for illegal art since 1995” has already journeyed many continents.
Leaving his work as an urban muralist aside, his works tend to contain a strong critical weight that fosters reflection from the spectator. In that sense, the exhibition collects pieces of the utmost variance. Some from his Humanimals series with which he breaks established codes and proposes an ironic vision of them, others conceived from series of mirrors that interpellate the viewer, sculptures that subtly, but without losing their potency, address modern societies’ environmental troubles; three-dimensional images that seem to come to life… It is definitely a representative show of the artist’s artistic journey, not only on an aesthetic and formal sense, but also in a technical sense which will allow the spectator to approach the surprising works of this multidisciplinary artist.
