«OTHER LIVES»
Ángel Cañas, Iván Gómez y Alejandro Jaqs
Muestra comisariada por Raquel Rico y Sergio Sánchez
10/01/19 – 12/02/19
The collective exhibition “Other Lives” revolves around the concept of “using and throwing away” and opens a serious debate on the accumulation of waste and their management. The aim of Other Lives is the generation of consciousness on the urgent need to take care of the planet, stir up critiques against consumerism and promoting reflection and debate in those societies that generate an immense amount of waste each day.
In this way, “Other Lives” refers to those other lives the discarded materials acquire after being given a new meaning, many of them turning into works of art, as is the case of the works that comprise our show. We start from the idea of creation through the “found object”, the shape of the forgotten, what brings the author towards the works’ conclusion. This plot development refers to the concept of memory, which is associated with man’s need to possess and accumulate, and thus his capacity to forget. A natural and cyclical process, intimately linked to the creation of a new object with a forgotten object, thus generating a completely different creation.
Based on this plot line we have gathered three artists that conceive their work through recycled materials and elements. From the potent animal statues by Ángel Cañas made from rubber and recycled tires, Iván Gómez’s sculptures and carousels made from irons and metals, the collages and unexpected compositions that Alejandro Jaqs creates from different materials and elements that he takes directly from nature.
