Myths, what we call myths, have always existed and will always exist. Thousands of years ago they were at once the precursors to our modern TV series and the poetic explanations of every why. Absent science, philosophy and reason; poetry explained all. But how the heck are myths formed? How does mythomorphosis occur? How have they survived so many millennia?
Well, all that’s because we have always looked for answers, because curiosity is one of the characteristics that make us human, very human. Why was there echo in the mountains? A myth explained it: it was the nymph, Echo, condemned by the gods to reply. Why was there coral in the Red Sea? Another myth told, the blood of the gorgon had petrified when it fell to the sea… The fear of the unknown is otherwise overwhelming. Myths, answering that which we do not know, also compose eternal stories, tales to be told under lamplight at night or to watch on TV or to send via WhatsApp. Classical myths are enthralling stories filled with lust, terrible revenge, tragic destinies, superheroes, horror, alternate worlds…
Also, we still create myths. Not only of heroes, opera divas, Hollywood stars, footballers and rock and roll stars. We also create and believe in urban legends that nowadays spread at breakneck speed on social media. Everything is very modern and fast nowadays. But we haven’t changed that much.
